Barrack Hill Community Garden Committee

This group is a sub-committee focused on the management of the community gardens.  A policy document and gardens rules have been drawn up in conjunction with members of this group.  The Community Gardens is a place where family and community are a priority.

There are a total of 16 raised beds of different sizes within the community gardens and there are also 3 polytunnels two for planting up and growing on and one in the lower compound that is used for seed setting and seedling raising.  Members pay an annual fee of €50.

The Council also provided a Community tunnel to be shared between the Tidy Towns Committee, The Community Gardens and Barrack Hill Town Park – this space is a great resource as it can be used for workshops for community groups and schools.  It is also used to grow on flowers by both The Barrack Hill Town Park Steering Committee and the Tidy Towns.  The Tidy Towns also have their own tunnel.

In the past local schools, scouts and any other interested youth groups were given a raised bed each in lower compound for teaching and learning purposes. The community gardeners are also willing to help look after the beds during the summer months when the schools are on summer holidays. Spraoi’s Special Class group have a small bed for growing strawberries and flowers.
